Sea level rise is one of the great challenges of our time. Here in the Ocean State, we are especially sensitive to a changing climate and the impact that it has on our commerce and our health. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) notes that the changing temperature of the oceans can be a major impact on fishing economy. As residents of Newport and Jamestown, we know that changes to the sea level as the global temperature warms year after year could have a potentially devastating impact to our industry, as well as affect the natural beauty we all love. This issue hits especially close to home when we consider the increase in frequency of flooding in the Point in Newport, part of a National Historic Landmark District. With the projections for sea level rise only set to increase, all of the citizens in District have a vested interest in working to combat and mitigate climate change. I will work with state and regional leaders to make sure that our District is at the front of this effort.
